Business Insurance Is a Team Sport: Don’t Skip the Offseason

BUSINESS INSURANCERISK MANAGEMENT

Successfully managing business insurance requires consistency—from training camp through the Super Bowl—even during the off-season.

Professional athletes don’t dust off their cleats only when a new season is about to begin. Likewise, business leaders shouldn’t wait until renewal time to review and adjust their insurance programs.

The NFL Coaching Operations division follows a precise timeline and strategy to ensure teams are prepared for peak performance. At our brokerage, we apply a similar structured approach when creating or renewing business insurance programs for our clients.

Here’s how we break it down:

Training Camp (120 Days Out)

Conversations should start four months before your renewal (or effective date for new ventures). This allows enough time to develop a comprehensive strategy for your insurance needs.

Preseason (90 Days Out)

Once you’ve chosen your broker, a discovery period begins. This phase focuses on learning every detail of your business—its operations, products, logistics, and unique risks.

Regular Season (30–60 Days Out)

With discovery complete, your broker gathers data (locations, payroll, revenues, employee count, etc.), builds a narrative for underwriters, and begins marketing your business to insurance carriers.

Postseason (Less Than 30 Days Out)

Marketing concludes, and proposals are carefully reviewed and compared. Your broker works with you to make final decisions, and coverage is bound accordingly.

Super Bowl (Renewal Date)

This is game day—when all the preparation pays off. Policies are officially bound, ensuring your business is protected from potential risks, disruptions, or liabilities based on your coverage.

Off-Season (Ongoing)

A strong insurance strategy doesn’t stop after renewal. Regular check-ins throughout the year help verify details, make adjustments, and prepare for audits, ensuring no surprises when the next cycle begins.

Many business owners only review their insurance program once a year, but that can lead to gaps and missed opportunities. If your current broker isn’t following a structured, year-round plan, consider getting a second opinion. A fresh perspective can provide:

  • Deeper insight into your existing policies

  • Alternative coverage solutions

  • Enhanced service and support
